New law aims to protect journalists

Crime reporter Jose Luis Romero was kidnapped in Sinaloa on December 30. Hours later, the chief investigator in the kidnapping was murdered. Two weeks ago, Romero’s remains were found in the same northern state, his body riddled with bullets, his hands and one leg broken.

Romero had covered the police beat for the statewide radio broadcaster Línea Directa, says the Committee for the Protection of Journalists (CPJ), an organization that has also demanded a thorough investigation into the almost rhetorical question of whether the kidnapping was related to one of Mexico’s violent drug gangs.
