Seven-year-old Peggy Brown set foot in Veracruz on the eve of World War II to be greeted by a sudden swarm of flies in her face and a rather unpleasant smell. Her first thought was to get straight back on the boat to England.
But waiting for Brown on the quayside was her father – up until then such a fleeting figure in her life that she had to ask her mother what he looked like.
Brown had only known her father Fred during the short trips he took back to England from Mexico, where he worked for the American Smelting Company in Mexico City. Now father, mother and daughter would be together as a family for the first time, although her considerably older sister and four brothers had all remained in an England on the brink of war.
