Ajijic bird lover creates hummingbird heaven

Florence Merrifield, who moved to Ajijic 20 years ago from Yakima, Washington and other points north, has turned her home patio into a virtual hummingbird refuge. She keeps 16 feeders numbered, cleaned regularly and filled with the simple syrup that the tiny visitors adore. Currently, there are about 200 mouths feeding at what she calls “Flossie’s Fast Food Fly Through.” Here, she talks about her passion with Jeanne Chaussee.

You’ve lived in Ajijic for a long time. Obviously, you’ve enjoyed it. What made you chose this place?

My husband and I ran a fruit stand in Yakima and I worked as a nurse’s aid. My friends kept telling us that Ajijic was the place to go but we just never  came. Then my husband passed away so I looked into it. By this time I was in Arizona and I found out about the train. There isn’t any passenger train anymore but there used to be one. I really liked the trains. Anyway, it only took five days for me to decide that this was the place to be. It was a good choice for me because at that time my social security would go further and I wouldn’t need fancy clothes and I could get fresh fruits and vegetables all year long.
