In the Reporter’s second part of a continuing series on Rules of the Road, we delve into state and federal law concerning foreign-plated vehicles and their drivers.
A recurrent question we hear is: Can Jalisco traffic officers demand to see your vehicle importation and personal immigration documents?
Indeed they can. Although traffic officers are not authorized to stop you for the sole purpose of checking the documentation of a foreign-plated vehicle and its driver, they may ask to see the paperwork after pulling you over for a traffic violation. This is the proper manner to verify legal ownership and proof of the vehicle’s legality to be on the road in Mexico. Simple photocopies are not considered as legitimate documents. If you are not comfortable carrying the originals, you may be able to get by with showing notarized copies. The officer is not permitted to retain any of these documents.
Pertinent clauses of Jalisco’s Ley de los Servicios de Vialidad, Tránsito y Transporte state as follows:
