A couple endeared to many in Mexico’s foreign community have just passed a very special milestone. Catherine and Bishop Melchor Saucedo (retired) celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on August 14. Appropriately, the celebration was noted during the Sunday morning worship service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church at Lakeside.
Saucedos are an integral part of the growth of the Episcopal (Anglican) Church in Mexico. Throughout the mid-1900s the English-speaking Episcopal Church spread over Mexico, especially in rural areas. The first Mexican Episcopal Bishop, Efrain Salinas y Velasco was vigorous in his work, aided by three young Mexican priests, two of them brothers Melchor and Jose Guadalupe Saucedo. Melchor “Mel” Saucedo became Bishop of the Diocese of Mexico in 1964. The Anglican Church of Mexico was divided into three dioceses in 1973 and later into five, as it is today.
Still happy in their marriage and about their work, Catherine (C) and Mel (M) talked about their life together with Jeanne Chaussee last week.
(To Catherine) Where are you from?
(C) I’m from Virginia. (Mel adds) From one of the so-called “first families” (Weadon) of Virginia.
One of you is from Mexico and one from Virginia. How did you meet?
(C) We met on a blind date. Mel was going to seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. That was 1944. We kept writing letters after he left until the end of the War (1945) and he came back in 1946 and we got married.
Were you Episcopalian?
No. I was a Methodist but I’d always been very active in my church.
