On seeing his visa, one of the victims realized that the document that Carlos Alavid Rojas provided was far from authentic but merely a photocopy of a real visa with computer alterations to the photos and details. Suspecting a hoax, the man notified security guards at the consulate.
When police arrived, Alavid, 22, tried to flee but was rapidly apprehended.
Alavid, a native of Veracruz, admitted to carrying out the same scam in Mexico City and the state of Tabasco, affecting more than 20 people.
It is extremely unlikely that people saying they can act as intermediaries to obtain U.S. travel visas can actually do so.
