The streets of downtown Guadalajara are now officially “walkable” after months of renovations caused traffic congestion, a sharp downturn in business and months of dusty, contamined air. Although the work is not quite finished, the downtown area is certainly looking more stylish after the six-month facelift.
The work was due to be completed by May 30 and the contractors will be fined 100,000 pesos for each day over the deadline. The repaving and recabling reportedly cost 200 million pesos.
Some 200 business owners filed a civil suit against Guadalajara Mayor Alfonso Petersen, who they say has “abused his authority” at every stage of the 200-million-peso project.
Some businesses saw their earnings drop between 50 and 80 percent.
