Controversial stop-and-search convoys and roadblocks will soon become a feature of the metropolitan area of Guadalajara.
Eight mayors have signed an agreement to employ controversial stop-and-search convoys and roadblocks (referred to in Spanish as columns de seguridad, retenes or volantas) in an attempt to paralyze organized criminals following a rise in the number of violent drug gang-related incidents in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara.
The mayors of Guadalajara, Zapopan, Tlaquepaque, Tlajomulco, Tonala, El Salto, Juanacatlan and Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos agreed to the new security plan, which also involves the federal and state governments, at a meeting held late last week.
