Catholics and gay rights' activists lock horns

Downtown Guadalajara became protest central this weekend as gay rights’ activists confronted Catholics angered by the recent Supreme Court decision to uphold a Mexico City law allowing married same-sex couples to adopt children.

Activists had initially called the protest after Cardinal Juan Sandoval, the archbishop of Guadalajara, referred to homosexuals as “maricones” (a highly derogatory word similar to "fag" in English) in an August 15 press conference in Aguascalientes.   Sandoval then added more fuel to the fire by subsequently accusing Mexico City Mayor Marcelo Ebrard of paying off Supreme Court judges to uphold the gay adoption motion.
