Chapala firms up events for patriotic month

Chapala area residents can start marking their calendars for the series of festive events scheduled to mark the 200-year anniversary of Mexico’s independence.

Coronation Ball

Chapala’s Señorita Bicentenario will be crowned during the gala dinner-dance set for  Friday, September 3, following the final round of the beauty contest. The event will be held at La Palapa del Guayabo, located at the east end of the the Chapala Malecon, starting at 8 p.m. Tickets, priced at 150 pesos per person, are now on sale at the city tourism office at Plaza La Vela, the Municipal Archives at the main intersection, and at city hall.

Mexican film fest

Cinemas del Lago will host a week-long Mexican Film Festival running from Friday, September 4 through Thursday, September 9. The program includes six documentaries and two full-length feature films, all turning on historical episodes and personalities. Three shorts will be run prior to each full length movie. Admission is free of charge for daily screenings starting at 4 and 7 p.m. daily. Feature film titles are listed as follows:

September 3: Pancho Villa, la Revolucion no ha Terminado; documentary, personnel memoirs by acquaintances of the revolutionary hero, subtitled in English.

September 4: La Sombra del Caudillo; fictionalized history of post-Revolution era, a controversial 1960 film directed by Julio Bracho, based on novel by Martin Luis Guzman, officially banned for 30 years.

September 5: Del Olivido no me acuerdo; documentary on Jalisco novelist Juan Rulfo.

September 6: Los de Abajo; fiction feature based on Mariano Azuela novel.

September 7: ¡Que Viva Mexico!; documentary, six short segments on Mexico history and culture.

September 8: Un retrato de Diego; documentary on artist Diego Rivera.

September 9: Los Ultimos Zapatistas, Heroes Olivadados; documentary on aging Revolution fighters, subtitled in English.

The program is subject to last minute changes; check at theater box office for up-to-date schedule.

Ajijic traditions

A special attractions not to be missed in Ajijic is the traditional Regatta de Globos, the paper hot air balloon spectacle slated for Saturday, September 11, 3 p.m. at the soccer field located opposite the Plaza Bugambilias shopping center. The town plaza will be the venue for the Exhibicion del Rebozos – a unique fashion parade that showcases popular use of the typical Mexican shawl in the context of local festivities – scheduled for Sunday. September 13, 6 p.m.
