The Brisas de Chapala and Chapala Haciendas subdivisions located on the northern outskirts of the municipal seat have been targeted in a rash of daytime robberies that began at the start of the year.
While the Chapala police department has beefed up patrol rounds in the area, residents are advised to remain vigilant and exercise extra precautions such as keeping their gates, doors and windows carefully secured at all times.
Records at the Chapala Ministerio Publico (MP) public prosecutor’s office indicate that the crime wave started on January 2, with a break-in at the home of a U.S. citizen who had left the premises for about one hour. The victim returned to find that a laptop and a portfolio containing personal documents were missing.
The next day, a foreign couple residing in Brisas was subject to the first of three similar home invasions reported in the vicinity this month. Armed robbers accosted the pair as they arrived from an outing, forced them inside and tied them up. After ransacking the house for a full hour, the criminals left with a cache of jewelry and electronic equipment, stealing the victims’ 1987 Honda pickup and 2010 Ford Fusion in the getaway.
On the night of January 3 a Mexican neighbor came home at the end of the work day to find signs of a break-in. In the homeowner’s absence, robbers absconded with assorted electronic gear and other valuables.
