Adding to the natural panorama of Chapala’s waterfront Malecon is the small flock of white pelicans that has recently taken up winter residence near the shoreline.
Passersby can enjoy observing the birds placidly paddling around in the water throughout daylight hours. But the real spectacle is the daily feeding frenzy that usually unfolds around 1 p.m., when a boatman casts off from the wooden pier with a load of buckets filled with scraps collected from fishmongers at the local market. Lake Chapala is one of Mexico’s winter habitats for the American White Pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), a species that migrates from shallow freshwater lakes and marshlands in southern Canada and the north central United States. The birds fly south in October and November, making the return trip in March for the spring breeding season.
