Free women’s clinic gains traction

Women living in one of Chapala’s most economically challenged neighborhoods are taking advantage of a new maternal health program spearheaded by registered nurse and midwife Sylvia Flores.

The pilot program at the Tepehua Community Center began two weeks ago.

In its first week, 30 women took advantage of the program, while twice that number came to the clinic for Pap smears, breast checks, pre/post natal care and family planning education during the second week.

“Of the 30 Pap smears taken that first week, only two were normal,” said Moonyeen King, the center’s director. “The rest had various sexually transmitted diseases and some were very serious. This ratio is alarming.”
