Donations slump
Registered charitable donations in Mexico plunged by 17 percent in 2009 compared with the year before. According to Mexico’s tax authority (SAT), donations had steadily increased since 2005 but dropped sharply during last year’s economic crisis. Meanwhile, donations to U.S. charities dropped by a mere 3.6 percent, according to USA Giving. Mexico’s 6,282 authorized non-profit charities received 33 billion pesos last year, seven billion pesos less than in 2009.
Cameron & Del Toro
Tapatio filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro is set to join forces with Hollywood heavyweight James Cameron. The cinematic visionaries are planning a production of “At the Mountains of Madness,” a short story written by H.P. Lovecraft in 1931. Said Cameron: “It’s a type of horror story that forces you to use your imagination to play with people’s fears.” Tom Cruise has been suggested as the protagonist and there is also talk of filming it in 3D. Cameron added, “If there’s a director on the planet that I would like to help as a producer, it’s Guillermo.”
King & Slim
CNN’s Larry King will interview Mexican businessman Carlos Slim in one of his final shows before he retires in December. “Although I know who he is, I won’t prepare the interview because I want to be curious, I want to learn from him,” King said this week about Slim, the owner of Telmex and the richest man in the world.
