Mexico City to debut electric taxis

Electric taxis will be circulating in Mexico City from April next year, says Marcelo Ebrard, the capital’s mayor. His original aim was to have 20 to 25 of the battery-powered vehicles in operation by March 2010.  Although the project has been delayed by more than a year, Ebrard says many more taxis will hit the streets next year than planned at first.

The vehicles were developed by the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) and will be manufactured by a private company at a rate of between 20 and 25 every three months. Although their cost, at 240,000 pesos, is more than double the average taxi, their ecological advantages mean that owners can save around 110,000 pesos in the first five years.   The vehicles can travel 54 kilometers per battery charge at a top speed of 95 kilometers an hour.
