One in every four people employed in the formal economy in Mexico lacks a work contract, social security and other privileges under the law, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO).
Although these workers are employed by businesses that pay their taxes, their conditions are less than ideal and their labor rights are being violated. According to Tomas Wissing, ILO chief for Cuba and Mexico, the number of workers in the country with social secuirity benefits did increase in 2010 after a drop in 2009 due to the economic recession.
