Jalisco Governor Emilio Gonzalez spent much of his public time this week defending his hard-line stance to keep abortion illegal for rape victims.
Gonzalez recently filed a motion with Mexico’s Supreme Court questioning the constitutionality of a new federal law that obliges hospitals to provide abortions to women who become pregnant after being raped.
“In Jalisco abortion is illegal,” Gonzalez told reporters. “Life here is guaranteed from conception to natural death.”
Gonzalez said he and the majority of citizens in Jalisco believe abortion to be wrong in all cases.
He said that social welfare organizations in the state offer support for women who become pregnant after being raped, as well as for single mothers.
