Next time you’re stopped by a Jalisco traffic (Transito) officer, look to see if he (or she) is wearing a waistcoat bearing the slogan “Yo juego limpio, paga tu multa en la tienda” (I play clean, pay your fine in the store).
The move is part of a program to be set up by the state comptroller’s office to encourage citizens not to offer bribes to public servants.
Despite the slogans emblazoned on traffic cops’ chests, state authorities say they are still working on the plan to enable citizens to pay their traffic fines in commercial establishments such as Oxxo stores or Soriana supermarkets. Currently, fines paid in banks within five days carry a substantial discount.
The state comptroller’s office has a free hotline number, 01-800-HONESTO, which provides information on how to pay traffic fines. Citizens can also use this number to register and file complaints against public servants.
