Guanajuato moves to allow public schools to teach religion

With a bow to the archbishopric of Leon, Guanajuato governor Juan Manuel Oliva is analyzing a proposal to teach religious education in the state’s schools.

“I’m a proponent of letting parents decide what they want their children to learn in school,” Oliva said. Asked about Mexico’s separation of church and state, he answered, “that is safe,” but it doesn’t imply we live in a society “absent of values.” Last Sunday, Leon Archbishop Jose Guadalupe Martin Rabago called on authorities to include religion in public education, saying that religious freedom is a right of Mexicans.

Like in the United States, Mexican public schools may not teach religion, although teaching about religion in a secular context is acceptable.

In the United Kingdom, religious education (known as RE) is still a compulsory subject in the public education system.
