Erick “Rick” Sargent

Longtime Lakeside resident Erick “Rick” Sargent died in a Guadalajara hospital on August 5 during surgery for an aortic aneurysm. He was 84 years old.

Born June 3, 1926 in Attleboro, Massachusetts, Sargent joined the U.S. Navy directly after high school graduation in 1944. He was discharged honorably in 1946 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts. Later, he earned a Masters of Education degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts. His career in education included teaching elementary school, high school and, finally, junior high school students. He also coached basketball, baseball and football.

Sargent was the president of the New Hampshire Education Association in 1971 and represented New Hampshire in the National Education Association for nine years, ending in 1981.

He and his wife, Mary Alice, were married July 29, 1957.

The Sargents retired to Mexico in 1991 and moved to Lakeside in 1992. Sargent was active with youth soccer and basketball and drove local girls to volleyball team practice and games every Thursday. The Sargents were personally responsible for assisting the educations of three Mexican youngsters who have now graduated from college studies and they still support the education of two local Mexican children.

Besides his wife of 54 years, Mary Alice of San Antonio Tlayacapan, Sargent is survived by a son, David Brouwer (a.k.a. Sargent) of Homestead, Florida; daughter Alexandra Brouwer, also of Homestead, daughters Melanie Sargent and her husband Steve Gregory of Mojave Valley, Arizona, and Charlene Matthews and husband Elliott of Eliot Maine and Tomara Cole and husband Mike Cole of Hokes Bluff, Alabama.

Grandchildren include Vincent Gregory, Iria Williams, Elissa Senra-Sargent, Emilia and Dustin Matthews, Melissa Lorenz and Samuel Cole. Sargent had four great-grandchildren: Landen, Kimberlynn, Shyla and Bailey Williams.

Sargent’s sister, Marilyn Schupp and her husband Rudy live in Hopewell Junction, New York and his brother Royal Sargent and wife Rita reside in Alcoa, Tennessee. He had numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday, August 18, 3 p.m. at the Lake Chapala Society. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to do so should make donations to the fund supporting the education of Sargent’s two Mexican godchildren. They may be left at the LCS office in the hands of Terry Vidal.
