Pit bull alert

Dear Sir,

On December 26, 2009 when returning home from a walk with my dog, a small Bichon Frisee, we were attacked by a 40 kilo pit bull. I had noticed this pit bull earlier because the woman who was walking this dog had attached a tire with a rope to the dog to slow it down.

The woman could not control this dog even with the tire attached. It got away from her and attacked me and my dog. It tried to kill my dog but I was able to finally make it release its grip around my dog’s throat. Thanks to the help of a Mexican family passing by, who rushed me and the dog to an animal shelter, my dog lived.

The police arrived at the animal shelter while I was in with the doctor, who was trying to save my dog’s life. I was told that they wanted to know if I had been bit. Because my hands and arms were totally covered in blood I could not tell what was the dog’s blood or my blood. And it was not the time to wash and look for my injuries.

After two months, countless visits to the animal shelter, my dog is finally able to once again be taken for walks on a leash.

On the morning of February 24, I saw the same woman, with the same pit bull with tire attached, again walking her dog along the carretera outside the small area in Chula Vista where we live. This meant I could not take my dog out for a walk without fear of it being attacked and killed.

With the help of the people at our rental agency, a complaint was filed with the Chapala police department. The result of this complaint is an agreement that restricts the pit bull to its owners property until April 2, the day our 5-month rental lease expires and we return home.

After this date this woman and her dog will once again be allowed to freely walk the streets of Ajijic. According to the police, they can only make an agreement that applies specifically to me and my situation. Therefore, after April 2, please beware of a woman walking a pit bull pulling a tire; your pet’s life might be in danger.
