Tea Party: chance to reach out

Dear Sir,

An open letter to the Lakeside USA Tea Party:

In the recent article in this publication about your group, you state that you want to “reach out” to the expatriate community. Here is your big chance.

1. You state that there is an “inherent benefit” when “private property … is secured by natural law.”  Please explain the benefit to the original property “owners” of the New World, the native inhabitants, whose ancestral lands were seized and occupied by European invaders, and their people massacred, herded into reservations, or enslaved.

2. If the “right to prosperity” is equally “secured by natural law,” please explain your position on the current banking, trading and investment scams, which have caused a national, as well as international, financial meltdown, affecting nearly the whole population of the United States.

3. Accordingly, do you believe that corporations have equal rights to persons under the law?

4. Please explain how loudly disrupting many town Hall meetings throughout the United States in an effort to squelch the debate over health care reform furthers the democratic process. And what exactly are your solutions to the many dilemmas of U.S. health care?

5. Please explain how a system that favors low taxes benefits the millions of unemployed, those who have had their homes lost to foreclosure, those whose retirement savings have tanked, those who depend on Social Security (into which they have paid for years), those whose property values have tanked, and those who have basically lost everything they have.

6. Using actual reality-based numbers, please explain how lowering taxes (for the rich?) will help trim the deficit.

7. Please explain exactly how “free markets” actually benefit the average American who is not an owner or CEO of a multi-national company, considering how many U.S. jobs have been shifted overseas.

8. Mexico could aptly be described as a low tax and low regulation type of society.  Look around you. There is no safety net, no unemployment, no social security for the elderly, no food stamps, virtually nothing in the way of health and safety regulations.  Therefore, millions of desperate Mexicans have been forced to seek employment in another country, creating the illegal immigrant issue.  Is this the scenario you would like to see – desperate U.S. citizens fleeing into Canada to survive?

9. Please explain your position on the individual’s right to choose (or not) to have a legal, safe abortion.

10. The Second Amendment stated that a “well-regulated militia” was necessary to secure the safety of the people during the time of the occupation of the British Army. With today’s law enforcement and security forces, how does home/personal gun ownership benefit society?  If the proper safety procedures are followed (weapons unloaded and locked away), they are useless in an actual emergency.  Please explain your position on gun ownership, keeping in mind that when guns are very easy to get, the criminals will surely be armed to the teeth.

11. What role, if any, does Karl Rove play in the Tea Party?

All I ask is that you answer my questions as I have stated them.  In a fair debate, you must answer the questions you are actually asked, not the ones you wish you were asked.

Micki Wendt, Ajijic
