Is spreading the wealth a ‘First World’ requirement?

It’s a puzzling paradox that Mexico is the world’s 11th biggest economy in terms of GDP but there’s still a debate whether it should be credited as a “First World” country.

Expats from Chapala getting off the bus at Guadalajara’s glitzy Plaza Andares surely wouldn’t argue the call, nor would golfers enjoying the lush, well-watered fairways of the Guadalajara Country Club or tourists lounging in secluded five-star hotel opulence in Pacific Coast resorts.
