Tecos implode in quarter final to cap a season of failure for Guadalajara soccer

Pumas 3-0 Tecos

(Tecos lose 3-2 on aggregate)

Pumas of Mexico City overturned a two-goal deficit from the first leg of the tie and snatched a late winner to advance to the semi-finals of the playoffs, leaving the Zapopan-based Tecos to reflect on what has been a disappointing season for all three teams from the metropolitan zone of Guadalajara.

The battle of the universities ended in heartbreak for the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara Tecos, 2-0 victors in the first game.

The second half provided most of the excitement as Pumas, with little to lose, laid siege to the Tecos goal. The deadlock was broken in the 46th minute as Pumas capitalized on their possession and the Guadalajara team began to look nervous and ragged in defense.

Veteran striker Francisco Palencia (ex Chivas) was the hero of the day when he came on as a substitute and scored in the 85th minute with a long-range shot drilled into a corner of the goal to secure Pumas’ passage to the semifinals.

Pumas ended Tecos’ title aspirations with a third goal, set up brilliantly by Palencia, in the 92nd minute.
