Chivas, after losing the final of the Copa Libertadores in Brazil after a controversial game that ended with punches being thrown, traveled straight to Cancun. It wasn't for a holiday though. They were in the resort town to play Atlante, who hadn't won a game during the Apertura 2010.
Chivas took the lead within a minute but it all came tumbling down, Atlante eventually winning 2-1.
The last few weeks have been historic for Chivas. After reaching the final of the Copa Libertadores, the continent's highest profile competition, Chivas beat Manchester United in the inauguration of the new Estadio Omnilife. Unfortunately, Internacional of Brazil got the better of the Guadalajara team.
The rubble left after the busy last month isn't pretty. Chivas only have four points in the domestic league and have an uphill struggle to qualify for the playoffs. On the positive side, at least the schedule is back to one game a week for the foreseeable future.
On the other side of town, it's difficult to see how things could get much worse for perennial underachievers Atlas.
They fired Argentine coach Carlos Ishcia after a terrible start to the Apertura that leaves them with just one point and at the foot of the overall table after they lost at home to Mexican champions Toluca on Saturday.
Rumors of infighting between the foreign and Mexican players continue to fill column inches and the club can best be described as a mess.
Few positives can be dredged up, but perhaps a new manager may be able to turn things round?
Most Atlas fans are keen for the club to use more young, home-based players. Traditionally, the institution has nurtured some top talent like Rafael Marquez, Andres Guardado, Oswaldo Sánchez, Pável Pardo, Jared Borgetti etc.
