Locals shine in Youth Olympics

Two Guadalajara athletes claimed bronze medals in the first ever Youth Olympic Games held in Singapore. The entire haul of the Mexican team was seven medals. Abraham Camacho, 16, finished third in the pentathlon to become the first Tapatio to win a medal at the Youth Olympics.

“We had in our minds a top eight finish which would have been a great result,” said Camacho. “But everything went smoothly and you can see the outcome.”

Camacho said his next goal was the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara and hasn’t ruled out the possibility of qualifying for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, although he admitted he might still be “too young.”

Guadalajara diver Ivan Garcia won his medal Tuesday in the 10-meter springboard competition.

The youngster declared himself delighted at the result and for overcoming his nerves in the later stages of the competition.

“I’m very happy and now I can’t believe I won (the bronze),” said Garcia.

The games ended on Thursday, August 26. Although the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organizing Committee did not keep an official medal tally, unofficial sources confirm that China finished top with 30 gold medals, 15 silvers and five bronzes. Russia came in second place and South Korea third. The United States was in 13th place with four golds, nine silvers and eight bronzes.  Canada was in 16th place with 12 medals, including three golds. Mexico finished 66th.
